Fine Art Appraisals, Estate Administration & Planning

Stephen McCanse works in Toronto, ON, in the heart of the Annex neighbourhood. He has been involved in the art business for over 30 years. He has established excellent working relationships with a network of gallery owners, auction house professionals, appraisers, curators, restorers, shippers, and fine art installers throughout his career.

McCanse has an active appraisal business, preparing fine art appraisals for various purposes. These include estate planning, estate administration tax, equitable distribution, insurance, Certified Cultural Property donations, and charitable donations. His clientele includes private individuals, estate trustees, corporations, insurance companies, and public institutions.

McCanse has provided valuable assistance to numerous private clients in building their fine art collections. Clients include a broad range of collectors, from print and drawing enthusiasts, to those who collect works by Canada’s most acclaimed artists. He has successfully facilitated both the acquisition of new artworks and the sale of pieces that clients no longer wish to retain. Leveraging his extensive network of professional contacts, McCanse is adept at sourcing museum-quality paintings and prints for private collectors. Furthermore, he excels at enhancing their comprehension of the secondary art marketplace.

McCanse also works with public institutions, assisting in the procurement of artworks for potential acquisition and aiding in the de-accessioning process for selected pieces from their collections. In addition, he conducts comprehensive reviews of existing insurance policies to ensure that collections benefit from sufficient coverage for insurance replacement. Institutional clients include the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, and the University of Toronto.

McCanse has extensive experience preparing numerous donation appraisals for ADAC (Art Dealers Association of Canada), and all his reports are prepared in compliance with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP), of the American Appraisal Standards Boards, and the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board (CCPERB).

Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP)

The Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) is a set of standards used in the United States for a variety of appraisal projects. Although these standards are used in the United States, they are also used by Canada Revenue Agency in the context of appraisal services in Canada.

The Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) is the generally recognized ethical and performance standards for the appraisal profession in the United States.  USPAP was adopted by Congress in 1989, and contains standards for all types of appraisal services, including real estate, personal property, business and mass appraisal.  Compliance is required for state-licensed and state-certified appraisers involved in federally-related real estate transactions.  USPAP is updated every two years so that appraisers have the information they need to deliver unbiased and thoughtful opinions of value.
