Collection: William Notman

William Notman (1826-1891)

William Notman was a renown Scottish-Canadian photographer, the first in Canada to gain international recognition. Notman's career launched with his first important commission in 1860, which was to photograph the grand opening of the Victoria Bridge across the St. Lawrence River; the photos he took so pleased Queen Victoria that she named him "Photographer to the Queen." Notman worked primarily in Montreal, although he established branches throughout Canada and the States. His work is represented within the collection of the National Gallery of Canada.
