William Kurelek (1927-1977) RCA
William Kurelek was a Ukrainian-Canadian artist known for his work that explored themes and subjects close to him, including struggles with mental health, his Ukrainian heritage, and religion. He was born in Alberta, one of seven children. Kurelek showed early interest in art and enrolled in the Arts General Course at the University of Manitoba, graduating in 1949. He later continued his studies at the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD) in Toronto. In his twenties, Kurelek moved to Europe after his studies and in London, having struggled with depression throughout his life, he admitted himself into a psychiatric hospital. During his stay he completed one of his notable works, The Maze, a painting inspired by Kurelek's boyhood and youth. Kurelek also completed murals and illustrated many books. He was made a member of the Order of Canada in 1976.
