Collection: Samuel Herbert Maw

Samuel Herbert Maw (1881-1952) CPE

Samuel Herbert Maw was an architect born in Suffolk, England. He studied in Britain, Italy, France, and Holland, and was awarded the Sloane Medal—the most prestigious architecture award in England. Part of the prize included a six-month stay in Italy, which is when Maw first began to etch. In 1912, Maw arrived in Canada, and two of his etchings were featured in the OSA’s annual exhibition the following year. He lived and worked in Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal, and continued his work as an architect; Maw helped design the Toronto Stock Exchange building at Bay and King. He had his first major exhibition of etchings in Halifax in 1922. The exhibition received critical acclaim, and the National Gallery of Canada purchased some of his works. 41 of Maw's etchings are in the permanent collection of the Art Gallery of Ontario.
