Collection: Louis de Niverville

Louis de Niverville (1933-2019)

Louis de Niverville was born in Andover, England to a family of thirteen children. A year later his family immigrated to Montreal, Canada, where he showed early interest in art. His family soon moved to Ottawa, where his father got a job working for the Department of Transport. In his early adulthood, Niverville worked as an office clerk while continuing to practice his art; upon encouragement from Paul Arthur, Niverville took a portfolio of his drawings to Toronto, which resulted in him receiving work from Mayfair magazine and a job offer from David Mackay at CBC Graphics. Niverville had his first solo shows at the Gallery of Contemporary Art in 1957 and again in 1959, and had subsequent shows at many Toronto galleries including the Here & Now Gallery, the Dorothy Cameron Gallery, Jerrold Morris Gallery, and elsewhere. Niverville completed murals for the Ontario Architecture Building Centre, the Toronto International Airport, and the Expo Theatre in Montreal. His work is represented within the collections of the Agnes Etherington Centre, the University of Western Ontario, and elsewhere.
