John (Jack) Martin (1904-1965) RCA, OSA, CPE

Described by William Colgate as “a born etcher,” John (Jack) Martin grew up in Nuneaton, England. In 1924, Martin came to Canada and was working for the design firm H.P. Ritchie in Toronto by 1926. He is credited with introducing the screen process and stencil methods to Canadian textiles. After much encouragement from Arthur Lismer, Martin began to enter his work in various exhibitions, first submitting in 1931. In 1945 Martin became Director of Design at the Ontario College of Art. He died in a car crash in Ayr, Ontario, in 1965.
