Jean McEwen (1923-1999)

Jean McEwen was born in Montreal, where he later studied pharmacy at the University of Montreal. During his studies McEwen was interested in painting and poetry, and a year before his graduation McEwen decided to pursue painting full-time. In 1951, he held his first one-man show at Galerie Agnes Lefort; that same year, McEwen traveled to Paris, where he spent time with Jean Paul Riopelle, Sam Francis, and Georges Mathieu. McEwen traveled Europe and returned to Canada in 1953, where he exhibited across various cities, including Ottawa and Toronto at the Gallery Moos. McEwen held many one man shows at prestigious institutions and galleries including the Tate Gallery in London, Galerie Anderson Mayer in Paris, and the Galerie Godard-Lefort in Quebec. His work is held within the collections of the Art Gallery of Ontario, Museum of Modern Art (NY), Vancouver Art Gallery, and elsewhere.
