Hilton Hassel (1910-1980) RCA, OSA

Hilton Hassel was born in Lachine, Quebec. He began painting at an early age, later studying at the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD). At OCA, Hassel studied under J.W. Beatty, J.E.H. MacDonald, and Franz Johnston. Following his graduation from OCA, Hassel traveled to London, where he studied at the Heatherley School of Art under Hayward Veal. Hassel later returned to Canada and found work at Brigden's in Winnipeg, where many other Canadian artists of note also worked. Hassel also worked for MacLean's magazine as an arts editor. In 1955, Hassel turned to painting full-time, traveling throughout Canada and Europe. Hassel was recognized for his portraits and landscapes, particularly his winter scenes. Hassel's work is held within the collection of the National Gallery of Canada.
