Collection: Gustave Baumann
Gustave Baumann (1881-1971)
Gustave Baumann was born in Magdeburg, Germany. Baumann and his family moved to the United States in 1891. He showed early artistic promise and by 17 he was working for an engraving house while attending night classes at the Art Institute of Chicago. Baumann returned to Germany a few years later to study wood carving at Kunstgewerbeschule in Munich. Baumann's work was well received, and in 1915 he won a gold medal at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Baumann later moved to Santa Fe, where he lived for over 50 years. Baumann's work is held within the collections of the Albuquerque Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the New Mexico Museum of Art, and elsewhere.
