Franz (Frank) Johnston (1888-1949) OSA

Franz (Frank) Johnston was a Canadian painter and member of the Group of Seven. He was born in Toronto and studied art at the Central Technical School under Gustav Hahn, later under William Cruikshank and George Agnew Reid. In 1916, he joined Lawren Harris and J.E.H. MacDonald on their tours to Algoma. His association with the Group of Seven was brief, leaving just after one exhibition in 1920 to take up a position as principal at the Winnipeg School of Art. He died in Toronto.
