Ernst Neumann (1907-1956) CPE

Ernst Neumann was born in 1907 in Budapest, Hungary. After immigrating to Montreal in 1912, where he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Art Association of Montreal. Neumann found work as an apprentice in a lithographer’s shop, which influenced his interest in printmaking. He later worked as a lithographer himself, sharing a studio with former classmate Goodridge Roberts, and together they gave art classes as the Roberts-Neumann School of Art. His catalogue also includes work in oil, woodcuts and etchings. He was celebrated for his fine, detailed print technique and his sharp eye for metropolitan scenes. In 1955, the Royal Society of Canada awarded him an overseas fellowship, which took him to France. He died the following year in Venice, Italy. Neumann was a member of the Society of Canadian Painter-Etchers and Engravers. He exhibited with the Royal Canadian Academy and the Art Association of Montreal. His work is represented at the National Gallery of Canada, and in private collections.
