Cyril Henry Barraud (1877-1965)

Cyril Henry Barraud was a British artist who primarily worked in etching. He was the son of noted photographer Herbert Rose Barraud, and helped at his father's photographic studio after training at the Brighton School of Art. C.H. Barraud immigrated to Canada in 1913, arriving in Manitoba where he became involved in the Winnipeg arts community, serving as President of the Manitoba Society of Artists and Craftsmen and later in 1915 founding the Winnipeg Art Club. Barraud enlisted in the war in 1915 but after wounding his leg, Barraud was posted to the Canadian War Office to serve as an Official War Artist. He produced some 300 sketches during this time, remaining in the army after the armistice to continue drafting some of his sketches into etchings. In the 1920s, Barraud returned to England. Barraud mostly worked in etching, much of his work depicting areas including Suffolk, Essex, Kent, the Thames Estuary and Rye.
