Charles Hepburn Scott (1886-1964)

Charles Hepburn Scott was born in Scotland in 1886. He immigrated to Canada in 1912 and began an expansive career developing the burgeoning arts culture of the Canadian west coast. After serving in the Canadian Army during the first World War, Scott moved to Vancouver, where he took up a post as the Arts Supervisor of the city’s schools. He was later invited to serve as the second principal of the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Art, a position that would prove to be challenging, but under Scott’s helm, the school flourished and bolstered Vancouver’s reputation as an artistic and cultural hub. Scott’s influence extended beyond the school, and with the help of H.A. Stone, he opened the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1931. He died in Vancouver in 1964.
