Bernice Fenwick Martin (1902-1999) CPE
Bernice Fenwick Martin was born in Shelburne, Ontario in 1902. She was a Canadian painter and printmaker and studied art at the Toronto Technical Schools and at the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD). Her teachers included John William Beatty and Franklin Carmichael. In 1941, Martin met artist Peter Clapham Sheppard, and the two would remain lifelong sketching companions up to Sheppard’s death in 1965. Between 1945 to 1947, Martin’s work was included in the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts exhibitions. Martin enjoyed one woman shows at Eaton’s College Street Fine Art Galleries in Toronto, at the Casa Loma in Toronto, and also at the Hamilton Art Gallery. Martin was a member of the Society of Canadian Painter-Etchers and Engravers, and the Print and Drawing Council of Canada. Martin died in Toronto in 1999.
