Avinash Chandra (1931-1991)

Avinash Chandra was an Indian artist who mostly lived and worked in the United Kingdom. Chandra lived for some time in Delhi, where his father ran the Cecil Hotel. His parents intended for Chandra to study engineering; they were unaware that Chandra had enrolled himself at the Delhi Poytechnic Art School until six months after the fact. Chandra graduated in 1951 with a first class arts degree, and in 1955, he sold his first painting for INR 4,375,000, the equivalent of approximately 51,600 USD. In 1956 Chandra moved to London. His work is held within the collections of the Arts Council of Great Britain, Museum of Modern Art (Berlin), Museum of Modern Art (Haifa), the National Trust for England, New York University, Punjab Museum, the Tate, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
