Alex Janvier (1935-2024)
Alex Janvier was an Indigenous painter in Canada born on Le Goff reserve in northern Alberta. When he was 8 years old, he was sent to Blue Quills residential school. Janvier later received his formal arts training at the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art in Calgary (now the Alberta University of the Arts). Following his graduation, Janvier taught at the University of Alberta. In 1966, the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs commissioned him to produce 80 paintings. He helped bring together a group of artists for the Indians of Canada Pavilion at Expo 67, among them Norval Morrisseau and Bill Reid. Janvier owned the Janvier Gallery in Cold Lake Alberta. He was a member of the Indian Group of Seven, which formed in 1973 and included Norval Morrisseau and Daphne Odjig.
