Harry Draper Wallace

Harry Draper Wallace (1982 – 1977), CPE, was born in Toronto to Lt. Col. Wellington Wallace and his wife Mary. He began his education at the University of Toronto, where he studied mineral engineering until his graduation in 1917. Shortly after graduating, following the outbreak of the first World War, Wallace was conscripted by the Canadian Military. Upon his return to Canada, Wallace attended the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD) in Toronto, where he studied etching under Frederick Stanley Haines.

After his studies, Wallace found a studio on Gerrard street and was commissioned to produce illustrations for several Toronto-based magazines, including Canadian Comment, Gossip, and Homes and Gardens. As his reputation grew, Wallace was lauded for his detailed architectural scenes, which he would sketch in pen-and-ink, and then etch onto plates to print. In Canadian Art, renown art critic and author William Colgate describes Wallace’s work as having a “feeling of solidity, with an accurate sense of proportion.”

In the 30s, Wallace became a member of the Society of Canadian Painter-Etchers and Engravers (CPE), with whom he exhibited for two decades. During this time, Wallace also exhibited multiple times with the Art Gallery of Ontario. In contrast with the beliefs of many of his contemporary printmakers, Wallace insisted upon producing his prints in small editions – generally less than 50 – as to not depreciate the value of his work over time.

Though he was celebrated for his etchings, Wallace began painting in oil and watercolour in the later years of his career, focusing mostly on natural subjects and landscapes. He also began wood carving, making a few pieces for sale and many for his own pleasure. Wallace passed away in Toronto in 1977 at 84.
